New Study from SHOPS Project finds Private Clinics Can Reach Low-Income Consumers through Efficient Operations

A study of a network of clinics in Kenya found that private facilities can provide high quality services that are affordable to low- and middle-income urban households by focusing on efficient operations.

SHOPS researchers conducted a process evaluation of LiveWell Health Clinics in Kenya to assess whether the organization could provide affordable, quality health services to the urban poor and be financially sustainable.

Although LiveWell primarily attracted middle-income households, SHOPS found that it served many poorer clients. Two and a half years after it was established, LiveWell reached an annual cost recovery rate of nearly 50 percent, with the largest clinic achieving nearly 80 percent.
